The African continent has a rich Jewish history. The best known communities, of course, are in Ethiopia and South Africa, but Jews have lived in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and other countries. While Shavei Israel is not active in Africa, you can explore the links below to learn more.
The large continent of Asia is home to perhaps the largest contingent of Jewish communities – some well known and others with a more tenuous hold on Jewish tradition. Shavei Israel specifically supports two communities in this region: the Bnei Menashe who live in northeastern India, and the Kaifeng Jews of China. Please click the links below to further explore some of the other Jewish (and would-be Jewish) communities in Asia.
There are a number of Jewish communities in the Caribbean. All of them were settled by Bnei Anousim who, fleeing the Inquisition, traveled with Columbus and other Spanish explorers to the New World. Some even suggest that Columbus himself was a “hidden Jew.” In this section, we look at the Jewish history of the some of the more important islands in the Caribbean, tracing it from the late 15th century until the present day. Also listed below are Jewish communities in Latin American countries (other than the Shavei-supported Jews of the Amazon and the Inca Jews).
Most of the Jewish communities Shavei Israel works with in Europe have their own web page – these include the Bnei Anousim, the Hidden Jews of Poland, and the Subbotnik Jews. You can use the informational pages listed below to learn more about other communities in Europe where Shavei Israel is not actively participant.
