Shavei Israel’s new emissary to the Subbotnik Jewish community in southern Russia, Aryeh Khodorkovsky, has been keeping busy during his first month in Visoky. His main tasks have been getting to know community members in their homes, along with organizing prayers on Shabbat and a minyan at the new synagogue in Visoky twice a week.

Khodorkovsky sent us some pictures of his activities. You can see a picture of him kashering dishes for Valentina Bocharnikova, a Subbotnik Jewish community member in Visoky, and several photos from the morning minyan. Khodorkovsky will remain in Visoky until the end of the summer. We first wrote about him here.

In more news from Russia, historian Eldad Fedorchuk has just completed his visit to Rodnikovskaya, in the southern region of Kuban. Fedorchuk, who is the director of the International Center for Jewish Education and Field Studies, began his trip with Dr. Velvl Chernin, Shavei Israel’s coordinator for the Subbotnik Jewish community, but stayed on in Rodnikovskaya, where approximately a quarter of the town’s 7,000 residents are either Subbotnik Jews or their descendants.

We have several pictures below of the Jewish community in Rodnikovskaya, including group studies, candle lighting before Shabbat, and affixing a new mezuzah to the doorpost of one of the community member’s homes. There’s more about Eldad Fedorchuk here on our website.
