Subbotnik Jewish community in Beit Shemesh comes out for Shavuot

The Subbotnik Jewish community in Beit Shemesh held a pre-Shavuot party last week in anticipation of the holiday that celebrates Matan Torah – the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. The event was organized by Shavei Israel’s Russia and Eastern Europe department director Esther Surikova.

Rabbi Zelig Avrasin, our emissary to the community, was the master of ceremonies for the evening which included a festive meal (featuring that Shavuot staple cheesecake) and a Ten Commandments interactive activity – community members were each given a sign with the text of one of the Commandments; they then had to move around the room based on group decisions on how the Commandments should be categorized.

Attendees used the Russian-language Shavuot booklet that Shavei Israel produced for the community last year, they listened to Israeli music, and discussed current news coming from the community back in Visoky.
