Kivunim group in Sicily

Two weeks ago, we shared with you a video of a group of American students on the Kivunim gap year program who visited the infamous Steri Palace in Palermo. Shavei Israel’s emissary Rabbi Pinhas Punturello made the visit happen and shot the video of the group spontaneously breaking out into song.

Rabbi Punturello has sent us more pictures from the group’s visit, and an update on their activities. In addition to the Steri, “we visited the old Jewish quarter of Palermo, the mikveh (ritual bath), the “Almedia” archive which houses a copy of the edict with the text of the Expulsion of the Jews from Sicily or their forced conversion to Catholicism,” Rabbi Punturello writes. “It was so important that a group of young American Jews and their teachers finally knows something about our job at Shavei Israel and the existence of Bnei Anousim in Italy.

In the pictures below, you’ll see the mikveh, the Expulsion text, and several shots of the Kivunim group meeting with local Bnei Anousim from Sicily and southern Italy.
