Shavei Israel has published a new booklet in Spanish and Russian on the upcoming holiday of Hanukah. A first edition of the booklet was published previously in Polish and in the Bnei Menashe languages of Mizo and Kuki.

The 40-page booklet includes two main sections – one explaining the history and traditions of the festival, and the other outlining the laws of Hanukah, such as how and when to light the candles and rules for making a kosher hanukiah (the Hanukah lamp). The booklet also includes all the main Hanukah songs, transliterated with phonetics to easily follow along, and even several recipes on how to make latkes (Hanukah potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (traditional Hanukah doughnuts).

Shavei Israel has printed several hundred copies in Spanish (more will be printed locally in Colombia) to be distributed by our emissaries. 120 copies printed in Russian will be distributed to the Subbotnik Jewish community in Beit Shemesh and other locations in Israel, and additional copies will be printed in Russia itself for use by the Subbotnik Jewish community in Vysoki. The booklet is also available for download online – the Spanish version is here and here, and the Russian version will be on the web shortly at this link.

Shavei Israel Chairman Michael Freund gave a dvar Torah (word of Torah) on the subject of Hanukah last week at Machon Miriam, Shavei Israel’s Spanish and Portuguese-language conversion and return institute, during which time he also handed out copies of the new Hanukah guide.
