Shavei Israel is well into the planning of our latest summer seminar for the Hidden Jews of Poland. This year, 25 young Polish Jews, many of whom have only recently discovered their Jewish background, will be coming to Jerusalem for two and a half weeks of study and touring.
The program, which will take place August 20-September 1, 2012 (2-5 Elul, 5772 on the Hebrew calendar), is packed with opportunities to reconnect with Judaism and learn more about both historic and modern Israel. Every day includes classes with Polish-speaking rabbis and educators. The main topics this year cover the laws of Shabbat; the festivals of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot; and “Keeping kosher in a non-kosher world.” Participants will also study the weekly Torah portion that is read in synagogue.
Rabbis Baruch Babaev, Yehoshua Ellis, Yitzchak Rappoport, Avraham Rabitz and Dawid Szychowska will be participating, along with Shavei Israel’s emissary to Poland, Rabbi Boaz Pash. Morning, afternoon and evening prayer services will also be available.
The touring part of the seminar includes trips to Hebron, Masada and the Dead Sea, Mitzpe Yericho, and the northern part of the country including the Sea of Galilee and the Kabbalistic city of Safed. The group will also visit the Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem and explore the underground tunnels paralleling the Western Wall.
Two special activities include a meeting with the Polish Ambassador to Israel, and an all day study seminar at a local yeshiva.
We’ve asked some of the participants of the seminar to tell us more about themselves. Here are profiles of two of the students in their own words.
Jedrek Pitorak
I was born in Krakow and now study biotechnology. My interests include biology, photography, trekking, cycling and horse riding. I enjoy meeting new people and speaking with them in foreign languages. I discovered my Jewish background when I was a teenager.
I came to Israel for the first time in 2009 when I participated in a Taglit-Birthright trip, and since then I have become interested in my Jewishness, my family story, and the history of the Jews over the ages. I began to come to the Shabbat dinners held in the JCC of Krakow and many of the other events taking place there. I have now learned Hebrew for over a year and I found the language very interesting (although challenging!)
I am looking forward to the seminar in August: I expect to have a great time with people from many countries, to learn more about Jewish life and culture, to practice Hebrew, and to see Israel one more time. I am an open-minded person, ready to experience many new things.

When I discovered my roots (my grandma was Jewish), I decided to go through the conversion process since, besides a genealogical tree, I don’t have any official proofs. I am looking forward to coming to Israel for the summer to see the country and to feel how it is to live a Jewish life every day, as in Poland it is very hard in terms of finding kosher food and there is no synagogue in my hometown. I want to live by the Jewish law even though my whole family is secular. I hope I will learn how to do it thanks to the Shavei Israel program. See you soon in Jerusalem!

Shavei Israel está llevando a cabo un seminario para los judíos polacos. Este año, 19 jóvenes que han recientemente descubierto su identidad judía, participan en el programa de Jerusalem durante dos semanas de estudio y paseos.
El programa, el cual tiene lugar entre el 20 de agosto y el 1ero de septiembre (2-5 de elul en el calendario judío), está lleno de oportunidades para reconectarse con el judaísmo y aprender más sobre la histórica y moderna historia de Israel. Cada día se incluyen clases con rabinos y educadores de habla polaca. El tema principal este año, incluye leyes de Shabat; las festividades de Rosh Hashaná, Yom Kipur y Sucot; y “cuidar kashrut en un mundo no kasher”. Los participantes también estudiarán la porción semanal de la Torá que se lee en la sinagoga.
Los Rabinos Baruch Babaev, Ytzjak Rapoport, Avraham Rabitz y Dawid Szychowsky, participarán, junto con los emisarios de Shavei Israel, el Rabino Boaz Pash y el Rabino Yehoshua Ellis. También se realizarán las plegarias de la mañana, de la tarde y de la noche.
La parte turística, incluye paseos a Hebrón, a Metzadá y el Mar Muerto, a Mitzpé Yerichó y al norte del país incluyendo el Kineret y la ciudad kabalista de Tzfat. El grupo también visitará el Barrio Judío de la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalem y explorarán los túneles subterráneos del Kotel.
Dos actividades especiales incluirán un encuentro con el Embajador polaco en Israel, y un día de estudio en una yeshivá local.
Hemos pedido a algunos participantes que nos relaten más sobre sí mismos. Aquí tienen dos historias:

Nací en Cracovia y estudio biotecnología. Mis intereses incluyen biología, fotografía, treking, ciclismo y cabalgar. Disfruto de conocer nuevas personas y de hablar con ellos en otros idiomas. Descubrí mis raíces judías cuando era adolescente.
Llegué a Israel por primera vez en el 2009, con Birthright y desde entonces, estoy interesado en mi judaísmo, la historia de mi familia y la historia de los judíos a lo largo del tiempo. Comencé a asistir a las cenas de Shabat en el JCC de Cracovia y muchos otros eventos que tienen lugar allí. He estado estudiando hebreo por un año y encuentro al idioma muy interesante (¡y muy desafiante!).
Espero ansiosamente el seminario en agosto: espero pasar un lindo momento con gente de varios países, estudiar más sobre judaísmo y cultura judía, practicar hebreo y ver Israel una vez más. Soy una persona muy abierta, listo para experimentar nuevas cosas.

Cuando descubrí mis raíces (mi abuela era judía), decidí comenzar con un proceso de conversión, debido a que más allá de un árbol genealógico, no tengo pruebas oficiales al respecto. Tengo muchas ganas de venir a Israel en el verano, ver el país y sentir cómo es vivir una vida judía diariamente, debido a que en Polonia es muy difícil encontrar comida kasher y no hay ninguna sinagoga en mi pueblo. Quiero vivir de acuerdo a la ley judía, a pesar de que toda mi familia es secular. Espero aprender a hacerlo, gracias al programa de Shavei Israel. ¡Nos vemos en Jerusalem!
