Majorca’s Lost Jews Search for their Roots
Dozens of Majorca´s “lost Jews”, or Chuetas, whose ancestors were forcibly converted during the Spanish Inquisition, will gather this Friday for a seminar in Palma de Majorca exploring their Jewish roots.
The seminar, entitled “Components of Chueta Identity and their Historical Relationship with the Jewish People,” is being organized by the Jerusalem-based Amishav group, which assists “lost Jews” seeking to return to the Jewish people.
Participants will include rabbis and academics from Israel and Spain who will assess various historical and cultural aspects of the Chueta experience.
