Indian Jews Await Conversion

Bnei-Menashe, straight from India to the Western Wall

Jerusalem: Indians from the north eastern Jewry, commonly known as Bene-Menashes, are here for their formal conversion to Judaism.

Some 50 members of the Jewry community have arrived in Israel on a tourist visa and are a waiting the formal conversion.

Over the last decade some 700 members of the 6,000 strong community, from parts of Mizoram and Manipur which claim to be the Lost Tribe, have come to Israel and got settled down here.

A formal ceremony converting them to Judaism has so far been the common norm before they are granted Israeli citizenship.

Some writers in the recent past have considered them one of the ten lost tribes of Judaism.
