The Shaar Hashamaim Jewish community of Guatemala consists of some 15 families with one main problem: the community members all live too far to come for Shabbat and holiday services without breaking the restriction against driving on the Sabbath.
 
The community set out on an ambitious project: to build a complex that will include a synagogue, a center for Jewish studies, a restaurant, an apartment for the Rabbi, a mikvah, and places for the families to stay over Shabbat and holidays.
