Colombia Bnei Anousim receive new Torah scroll
With great joy, the Bnei Anousim community of Barranquilla, Colombia honored the reception of a new Torah scroll with a traditional Hachnasat Sefer Torah ceremony. The festive event was filled with singing and dancing together with the Torah scrolls, expressing the unbreakable tie between Jewish life and the laws of Moses. We have photos from the celebration – you’ll see the scrolls carried in procession and then danced into the synagogue.
The Hachnasat Sefer Torah was preceded by a large Shabbaton in which all the Bnei Anousim communities along the Colombian coast took part: Cartagena, Santa Marta and Valledupar.
These growing Zionist communities are composed both by descendants of Anousim who rediscovered their roots in recent years, and by people from a non-Jewish background who have chosen the path of conversion. They are assisted by Shavei Israel’s emissary in Colombia Rabbi Shimon Yehoshua. Local facilities include a yeshiva, mikveh (ritual bath) and a Talmud Torah elementary school for the kids. Kosher food is available as well.
We have some more pictures from a joint morning prayer service that took place in Cali with the participation of members of the Maguen Abraham community,
The community also sent us these gallery composites – print them out for your fridge!
