Preparing for the Shabbaton in the kitchen
Forty Bnei Anousim from Sicily and southern Italy participated in a two-day Shabbaton organized by Shavei Israel at the end of October. The weekend retreat was held in Palermo and the majority of the participants came from there, reports Shavei Israel’s emissary to the region, Rabbi Pinchas Punturello. Other attendees drove in from Catania and other towns in Sicily, and even from the southern Italian region of Calabria .
Shavei Israel’s presence was felt throughout the weekend. Three young men – Carlo, Marco and Salvo – who were in Jerusalem earlier this year for a Shavei Israel-sponsored seminar specifically for Italian Bnei Anousim (see our report here), prepared the drashot (talks on the Torah portion of the week) that were delivered at the Shabbat table.
It was also the first time many of the participants had the opportunity to use the new Italian birkonim (prayer and song book) that Shavei Israel recently published (see our report here). Rabbi Punturello writes that the birkonim “held a great place of honor on our table.”
Havdalah at the Shabbaton
In addition to Torah talks, kosher food and plenty of schmoozing, the community learned and sang songs in three languages – Italian, Hebrew and Ladino (the Spanish-Hebrew hybrid) – “all the way from candle lighting at the start of Shabbat until the end of the weekend at Havdalah,” adds Rabbi Punturello.
What else have the Bnei Anousim of Sicily been up to? In the second week of December, the community hosted a Jewish group from Milan that visited southern Italy with the aim of better understanding Shavei Israel’s work in the region.
It was a significant step.
“It’s the first time that a mainstream Italian Jewish organization met officially with some of the people that Shavei Israel has been accompanying on their path back ‘home,’” says Rabbi Punturello. Sixty participants from Milan and fifty from Palermo and Catania took part in the meeting.
Then on Hanukkah, Shavei Israel returned to the infamous Steri Palace, the building that served as the headquarters of the Inquisition in Palermo from 1601 – 1782 and which also functioned as a holding cell for Jews awaiting their fate in the terrible auto-da-fe – execution by burning. In 2013, Rabbi Punturello, accompanied by some 200 Bnei Anousim, lit the hanukiah (the Hanukkah lamp) in the former dungeons for the first time ever. As we look to 2015, Rabbi Punturello is working with the mayor of Palermo and the UCEI (Union of Italian Jewish Communities) to establish an official center for Bnei Anousim in Sicily and southern Italy. We’ll write more as the process progresses.
Preparándose para el Shabatón en la cocina
Cuarenta Bnei Anusim de Sicilia y el sur de Italia participaron en un Shabatón de dos días organizado por Shavei Israel a fines de Octubre. Havdalá en el Shabatón
Además de las palabras de Torá, la comida Kosher y muchísimo parloteo, la comunidad aprendió y cantó canciones es tres idiomas – italiano, hebreo y ladino – “todo el camino desde el encendido de velas al comienzo del Shabat, hasta la finalización del mismo con la Havdalá” agrega el Rabino Punturello.
¿Qué preparamos ahora para los Bnei Anusim de Sicilia? En la segunda semana de diciembre, la comunidad recibirá a un grupo judío de Milano que visitará el sur de Italia con el objetivo de comprender mejor las actividades de Shavei Israel en la región.
Es un paso importante.
“Es la primera vez que una organización judía formal italiana visitará oficialmente a las personas que Shavei Israel acompaña en su camino de regreso a casa”, dice el Rabino Punturello. Sesenta participantes de Milano y cincuenta de Palermo y Catania participarán del encuentro.
Luego, en Jánuca, Shavei Israel retornará al infame Palacio Steri, el edificio donde se encontraban los cuarteles de la inquisición en Palermo desde 1601 – 1782 y que también funcionaban como celdas para judíos que esperaban su destino en los terribles autos de fe. El año pasado, el Rabino Punturello, junto con otros 200 Bnei Anusim, encendieron las velas de Jánuca en este mismo lugar, por primera vez en la historia. Escribimos sobre esto aquí.
