Relaxing before Shabbat with Rabbi Punturello
Every year, the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI), the official umbrella organization of Italian Jewry, organizes a seminar in the northern seaside resort town of Milano Marittima. The weekend Shabbaton is called Moked and it provides a place where more than 400 Jews are able to meet each other, study together, and celebrate Shabbat with joy – from the sumptuous kosher food and in-depth Talmud study to a program of Jewish arts with klezmer music and “Sephardi musical theater” featured in the post-Shabbat activities.
The Moked seminar has long been one of the highlights of the Jewish calendar for the entire Italian Jewish community…except for one group: the Bnei Anousim of southern Italy, who have never been invited. Until now.
As has been the case throughout southern Europe and South America, mainstream Jewish communities have never particularly welcomed the Bnei Anousim (people whose Jewish ancestors were compelled to convert Catholicism centuries ago); indeed, they’ve been viewed with suspicion. But this year, for the first time ever, 40 Bnei Anousim from Calabria, Puglia and Sicily, accompanied by Shavei Israel’s emissary to the Bnei Anousim in southern Italy, Rabbi Pinchas Punturello, made the 7-hour trip by car and train to attend the annual all-Italy Jewish seminar which was held last month.
What changed in the Italian Jewish community’s perception of the Bnei Anousim? Rabbi Punturello points to Shavei Israel’s active involvement and the joint project with UCEI that led to Rabbi Punturello’s appointment. “This made us much more serious in the eyes of people here,” he comments. We’ll have a complete profile of Rabbi Punturello and the work he is doing in southern Italy in an upcoming issue of Roots.
Whatever the reason, the Bnei Anousim were full participants in the seminar this year. Moreover, reports Rabbi Punturello, his counterpart in the north, Rabbi Reuven Roberto Della Rocca, the chief rabbi of Trieste, gave a remarkable, moving and public speech about the Bnei Anousim. “Our brethren from the south teach us to bring the light in every place,” Rabbi Della Rocca told the assembled crowd after the Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday night. “After centuries of darkness, a light exists thanks to the support of Shavei Israel.”
Rabbi Punturello was one of the presenters during the weekend. He spoke about the recent Jewish holiday of L’ag B’omer and its relationship with the famous rabbis of the Mishna, Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai and Rabbi Akiva. He also had time to do plenty of schmoozing on Shavei Israel’s behalf, including a productive conversation with Clive Lawton, the co-founder of Limmud, which creates Jewish study events around the world, and another with Angelica Edna Calo Livne, a well-known Israeli artist and educator who grew up in Rome and flew in for the weekend.
Other activities during the seminar included workshops on Israeli dance, Talmud Torah and a special session on how to build an eruv (a ritual enclosure that allows Jews to carry objects from one place to another on Shabbat). It is a tradition at Moked to build a temporary eruv around the entire city so that guests can comfortably walk between the seminar location and their hotels.
It wasn’t all about building community in Italy, though. On Sunday morning, Rabbi Punturello reports that he attended a workshop on Italian aliyah (immigration to Israel) that featured Claudia de Benedetti, the vice president of UCEI and president of the Jewish Agency in Italy, and Alex Luzon, who is responsible for aliyah from Rome.
For Rabbi Punturello, it was like closing a personal circle: he made aliyah several years ago from Italy with his wife and four small children and today travels back to Italy 10 days out of each month to provide programming for the burgeoning Bnei Anousim community. If that includes assisting them should their own interest in aliyah arise, Rabbi Punturello says he will be more than happy to help them follow his path.

The Moked seminar also allowed Bnei Anousim attendees from different towns and villages the opportunity to meet in one place to plan their own Shabbatonim. The next seminars to take place will be at the end of May and in June and July. These will be specifically for the Bnei Anousim in southern Italy. Antes de Shabat, con el Rabino Punturello
Cada año, la Unión de Comunidades Judías de Italia (UCEI), organización oficial que agrupa a la judería italiana, organiza un seminario en el complejo vacacional de Milano Marittima. El seminario de fin de semana es llamado Moked y promueve un espacio donde más de 400 judíos pueden encontrarse unos con otros, estudiar en conjunto, y celebrar Shabat con alegría – desde comida kosher y estudio profundo del talmud, hasta arte judaico con klezmer y un “teatro musical sefaradí”.
El seminario Moked ha sido por mucho tiempo uno de los más grandes eventos de la comunidad judía italiana… excepto para un grupo: los Bnei Anusim del norte de Italia, los cuales nunca fueron invitados. Hasta ahora.
40 Bnei Anusim de Calabria, Puglia y Sicilia, acompañados por el emisario de Shavei Israel en Italia, el Rabino Pinjas Punturello, hicieron un viaje de 7 horas en auto y tren para asistir al seminario.
¿Qué es lo que cambió la perspectiva de las comunidades judías respecto a los Bnei Anusim? El Rabino Punturelo dice que la presencia activa de Shavei Israel y el proyecto conjunto con UCEI es lo que nos convirtió en mucho más serios a sus ojos.
Y no solo que los Bnei Anusim participaron, sino que incluso el Rabino Reuvén Roberto Della Rocca, Gran Rabino de Trieste, dio un discurso público muy emotivo sobre los Bnei Anusim. “Después de siglos de oscuridad, existe una luz gracias al apoyo de Shavei Israel”.
Para el Rabino Punturello, esto fue un cierre de ciclo: hizo aliá hace unos años atrás desde Italia, junto con su esposa y sus cuatro hijos pequeños y actualmente regresa a Italia 10 días por mes para realizar actividades para la emergente comunidad de Anusim.

בכל שנה ושנה, האגודה לקהילות יהודיות באיטליה, שהיא האגודה הרשמית ליהדות איטליה, מארגנים סמינר בעיירת הנופש בצפון איטליה “מילנו מריטימה”. סמינר השבתון נקרא “מוקד” ומאפשר ללמעלה מ400 יהודים להפגש, ללמוד יחד, ולחגוג את השבת באושר עם אוכל טעים ותרבות המוסיקה והתאטרון הספרדי במוצאי שבת.
סמינר מוקד הינו אחד הרגעים בשנה שמחכים לו כל הקהילות היהודיות באיטליה – חוץ מקהילה אחת: בני האנוסים מדרום איטליה שלא הוזמנו אף פעם – עד היום.
קהילות היהודים בדרום אירופה ודרום אמריקה תמיד חשדו בבני האנוסים (קהילה שהוריהם הוכרחו להפוך לקתולים לפני מאות שנים) ואף פעם לא קיבלו אותם בידיים פתוחות. אבל השנה, בפעם הראשונה, 40 בני אנוסים מקלבריה, פוגליה וסיציליה, יחד עם שליח שבי ישראל לבני אנוסים בדרום איטליה הרב פינחס פונטורלו, הגיעו אחר נסיעה בת 7 שעות לסמינר היהודי-איטלקי המהולל שהתקיים בחודש שעבר.
רב פונטורלו מצביע על השתתפותה של שבי ישראל עם האגודה לקהילות יהודיות באיטליה בכדי להסביר איך היחס של הקהילות לקראת בני האנוסים השתנה לטובה. “אנחנו נראים יותר רציניים בעיני האנשים פה,” הוא אמר.
רבי ראובן דלה רוקה, הרב הראשי בטריסטה נתן נאום מרגש על בני האנוסים: “אחינו מהדרום מלמדים אותנו איך ניתן להאיר אור בכל מקום. לאחר מאות שנים של חשכה, נדלק אור בזכות התמיכה של שבי ישראל.”
ביום ראשון רב פונטורלו השתתף בסדנה בנושא עליה מאיטליה. בשביל הרב זו היתה סגירת מעגל: הוא עצמו עלה לארץ יחד עם אשתו וארבעת ילדיו לפני כמה שנים. כיום הוא חוזר לאיטליה לתקופות בנות 10 ימים בחודש בכדי לספק תכניות לימוד ותמיכה לבני האנוסים הנובטים. אם ייתכן שבני האנוסים יחליטו לעלות ארצה, רב פונטורלו ישמח לעזור להם ללכת בדרכו.
